Second Sunday on Main, 2006

What is Second Sunday on Main?
Second Sunday on Main is an economic initiative for the Main Street Business District in historic Over-the-Rhine. It is an incubator for new entrepreneurs and emerging artists, as well as a showcase for established businesses. This is a great opportunity for a variety of vendors, artists and craftsmen to be exposed to an urban, creative crowd looking for a unique experience. The shops, galleries and restaurants are open for Sunday brunch, browsing and businesses. Second Sunday on Main programs sidewalk activity to round out the experience, such as musicians playing for tips and selling CDs, performance artists, visual artists work while they sell and arts organizations can congregate to sell subscriptions. Second Sunday on Main brings together several OTR organizations providing a model of cohesive partnerships and cross-promotional support that fosters collaboration and trust that can be replicated with other OTR programs and community activities.

When is the program conducted?
Second Sunday on Main is held the second Sunday of the month for six months: May, June, July, August, September and October. Vendors line the sidewalks on both sides of Main Street in historic Over-the-Rhine (OTR), between 13th and Liberty Streets. The festival runs from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday is a relaxed day for people to explore and enjoy a sidewalk, open-air market place festival. The time is a convenience for an after-church destination for lunch and entertainment. However the collaboration among the various groups continues throughout the year and into other projects and programs.

What organizations and individuals are involved and leading this program?
Melody Sawyer Richardson, OTR property owner and stakeholder, chairs Second Sunday on Main. The steering committee includes Joan Kaup and Brian Tiffany; OTRCC, Marge Hammelrath and Chris Smith, OTR Foundation; Ken Jones, OTR Neighborhood Council; Pat Garry, psychics; Kristen, vendors; Julie Fay, David Smith, Merchants of Main; Colette Thompson, Kaldi?s; Toilyn O?Neal, liaison with artist community; Alisa Smith, OTR Resident; Tamia Stinson, liaison with designer community.

IMPACT Over-the-Rhine will grow and sell local produce as a business-readiness incubator for young people.
Architreks will conduct walking tours of the historic buildings in the district.
iRhine hosts the website, e-communication and e-marketing.

What is the goal or mission of Second Sunday on Main?
The short-term goals are people on the sidewalks of Over-the-Rhine on Sunday afternoons ? shopping, socializing, congregating, dining and enjoying the music, the art, and one another. Tolerance is practiced. Another goal is that Second Sunday on Main becomes a buzz, and got-to-go-there activity and destination. The intermediate goal is that the businesses that are so tenuous have made it over a hurdle of debt and despair. When the economics of a community are strong the people are stronger. Pride and hospitality become contagious. The long-term goal is an established, economically healthy business district in Over-the-Rhine.

How will Merchants on Main recruit merchants for the initiative? Will other organizations be involved?
The steering committee of Second Sunday on main consists of members of the OTR Chamber of Commerce, OTR Revitalization Corporation, OTR Foundation, Merchant son Main, and OTR Community Council. Each contacts and solicits privation from fellow entrepreneurs, vendors and artisan to participate. Our current database includes nearly 100 individuals, small business that participated last year and/or have expressed interest in participating this year.

How will the OTR Chamber of Commerce market the event? Please provide examples if available.
Our marketing plan includes the Enquirer, Kentucky Post, Cin Weekly, CityBeat, Cincinnati Herald and the Downtowner. We also pepper the print, radio and TV media with press releases throughout the program. Grassroots marketing such as yard signs, posters and fliers are effective for programs like this and included in our marketing plan. E-marketing plays a big part in connecting people and congregations.

What is the scope envisioned for Second Sunday? How many merchants? City blocks? Customers?
We envision the merchants and vendors will line the sidewalks on both sides of Main Street from 12tth to Liberty Street. Architreks will lead their monthly walking tour of Over-the-Rhine on the second Sunday of the month to coincide with program and bring a group of 10 ? 16 each week to the event. Each month we will align the program with an affinity group such as Urbanists, Baccalarian Society, Cincinnati Equality that bring their group to the neighborhood. Based on last year we will have 50 ? 200 visitors each month.
